Congressman Jim Renacci (R-OH-16) released a new TV ad Thursday titled “Washington at its Worst” that he hopes will propel him into striking distance of his opponent in the race for the U.S. Senate.
Incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who has been in elected office for 40 years, the last 25 in Washington, has consistently outpolled Renacci among Ohio voters.
Some observers have said Renacci needs to run more TV ads. They got their wish.
Watch ad below:
Brittany Martinez, spokeswoman for the Renacci campaign, told The Ohio Star the ads will run in the Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland broadcast markets.
The ad casts Brown as hypocritical, voting against Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, a nomination he reject before confirmation hearings even began.
Then when an accusation of sexual assault emerged at the 11th hour, Brown heaped coals on the head of Kavanaugh in tweets and public statements.
“Innocent until proven guilty. A privilege the radical left abandoned,” the narrator says in the ad. “They tried to destroy Judge Kavanaugh with unfounded claims.”
Unfounded or not, Brown tweeted that he “believed” Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, despite her failure to bring any evidence or witnesses to the Senate Judiciary Committee or to FBI investigators. The witnesses she named, including her best friend, explicitly denied any knowledge of an assault by Kavanaugh or even seeing him at the place where it allegedly occurred.
Topping off the ad are Brown’s own problems related to female battery. His ex-wife, according to court documents, accused him of physical and emotional abuse during their divorce more than a decade ago. The court granted her a restraining order against Brown, who was then accused of violating the order.
His ex-wife has since forgiven him and supports his political career. But that doesn’t negate the facts found in court documents.
The ad ends with the words: “Sherrod Brown: Dishonest. Phony.”
Below is a complete transcript of the ad
I’m Jim Renacci and I approved this message.
Innocent until proven guilty.
A privilege the radical left abandoned. They tried to destroy Judge Kavanaugh with unfounded claims.
And Sherrod Brown was one of the loudest voices.
“Even though we did not win the vote in the Senate (Saturday), we see you, we hear you, your story matters, and you are making a difference telling that story,” – Sherrod Brown
He would know. Court records show Brown physically abused his ex-wife.
Brown even violated a judge’s restraining order pushing, shoving and threatening the woman.
Washington at its worst. Sherrod Brown. Dishonest. Phony.
