Former State Representative Dr. Terry Johnson Recommended by Senate Republicans to Fill Vacant 14th District Seat, Could Face Primary Challenge

Senate President Larry Obhof announced Wednesday the recommendation of former State Representative Dr. Terry Johnson to fill the vacant 14th Senate District seat. Johnson served in the Ohio House from 2011 to 2018. He was forced to leave because of term limits. One of the other five aspiring appointees told The Ohio Star he is considering a primary challenge. More are possible.

State Rep. John Becker (R-Union Township) said, “I’m disappointed by the decision but accept it. My wife and I are considering our options. One of those options, of course, is to continue in the Senate race and run against the Columbus establishment. I can win that race, but the cost is my primary concern, especially when I have other attractive options to consider.”

Becker is in his final term in the Ohio House and currently serves as chair of the Federalism Committee.

Rep. Doug Green (R-Mt. Orab) was also vying for the appointment. According to Gongwer, the other candidates seeking the appointment were Clermont County GOP Chairman Greg Simpson, David Uible, owner of Uible Management Group and Paul Hall, and insurance salesman.

In a post announcing the decision, Johnson told family and friends,

My application for appointment to the 14th Ohio Senate seat has met with success. Thank you so much for the overwhelming support that you have generously given to this effort. Your prayers were heard by God, your letters and notes to the Selection Committee were read and appreciated, and the outcome was finally decided.

Serving others is one of the great joys of my life and I’m looking forward to getting to work once again in the legislature for the people of Southern Ohio. It was humbling to be included for consideration with the five other applicants, as each one is a great Ohioan and a great American. It is my sincere hope that the six of us will continue to work together to make the 14th District an even stronger and more prosperous place to live, work, and raise our families…”

Once approved by the Senate, likely later this month, Johnson will be the fourth member appointed this year.
