Morgan Harper, an ex-adviser to Richard Cordray, announced her candidacy Monday for Ohio’s Third Congressional District, currently represented by Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH-03).
According to The Cleveland Plain Dealer, it will be the first time since 2012 that Beatty has faced a primary opponent.
“It’s becoming increasingly hard for normal people to get by. The incremental things that we’ve been doing for the last several decades are not working,” said Harper, a 36-year-old graduate of Stanford Law School.
Harper announced her candidacy on Monday and discussed how she spent the first nine months of her life in a foster home.
“Working people are finding it more and more difficult to get by. We’re struggling to be financially stable, access affordable housing, and live in a clean environment. And we are still dealing with the effects of centuries of racial injustice,” she said.
“That’s why I’m launching this campaign today because we need a new generation of leadership, policies that will ensure my story is every child’s story,” Harper added. “This will be a grassroots movement led by us, for us. This isn’t politics for me, this is personal.”
Today, I'm launching a campaign to represent the working people of Ohio’s 3rd Congressional District because 36 years ago, Columbus gave me—a newborn with an uncertain future—a chance to succeed. I’m taking a chance now because I believe in you, just like you believed in me. pic.twitter.com/zph5q2qBOT

Beatty has represented the Third Congressional District since 2012, and before that was a representative for Ohio’s 27th Congressional District before maps were redrawn.
“I look forward to running in 2020 and serving the people of Ohio’s Third Congressional District,” Beatty told The Plain Dealer. “Throughout my entire life, both personally and professionally, I have fought for better jobs, better wages, and a brighter future for the people—and I promise to continue to do so each and every day here in Central Ohio and in Congress.”
Harper’s website reveals that she supports a number of leftist issues, including a “jobs guarantee” program, “tuition-free college,” a “universal income” program,” “Medicare for all,” and “reparations” for slavery.
