Ohio Dems Issue Letter of Support to UAW Strikers

The Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus, chaired by State Rep. Tavia Galonski (D-Akron), issued a letter of support Friday to the United Auto Workers union and its president.

As The Ohio Star reported, UAW called a national strike against General Motors last weekend after its collective bargaining agreement with the company expired. The two parties failed to reach a new agreement, though General Motors says it offered UAW more than $7 billion in U.S. investments over the course of four years, 5,400 new jobs, higher wages and improved benefits.

An estimated 46,000 General Motors workers are participating in the strike nationwide. The situation escalated Tuesday when General Motors announced that it wouldn’t pay for health care coverage for the duration of the strike.

As a result, the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus sent a letter to UAW President Gary Jones to express support for workers as they continue their strike.

“For days we have stood in solidarity as UAW members fight for fair wages, better healthcare, and a fair contract. Making the decision to strike is no small feat. It shows incredible bravery and respect for your fellow workers who enter each respective plant daily,” the letter states.

It was signed by 19 female House and Senate members, including House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron).

“As General Motors attempts to bust up the picket line by taking away health insurance for 50,000 families, we as members of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus are writing you all today to reaffirm our support for your strike,” the letter continues. “Unions are the backbone of labor in this country and we proudly stand behind the UAW and their efforts to ensure the fair treatment of employees across the country.”

“As negotiations continue, we are hopeful for a fair compromise from General Motors and successful strike,” the letter concludes. “We stand with you.”
