Trump-District Dems Who Voted for Impeachment Take Phone Calls, Hide Behind Binders to Dodge Questions

Several Democratic lawmakers from congressional districts carried by the president in 2016 were recorded hiding behind binders and taking phone calls when asked about their votes to impeach President Donald Trump.

Republican trackers with the National Republican Congressional Committee trailed several Trump-district Democrats, including Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN-02), who twice avoided questions about her decision to impeach President Trump.

“Congresswoman, if Trump is such a threat to Democracy, why won’t you send the articles of impeachment to the Senate?” one tracker asked Craig as she smiled and walked away.

Some members of the House’s Democratic leadership have suggested that they will indefinitely withhold the articles of impeachment from the Senate until Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) agrees to a “fair trial.”

Craig’s district went to President Trump by just over a percentage point in 2016, but she managed to unseat Republican Jason Lewis in 2018.

Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) covered her face with a binder when she was approached with questions about her support for both articles of impeachment.

President Trump carried her district by five percentage points in 2016. Stevens and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-08) are two of 31 Democrats representing a district won by the president.

Slotkin was approached by Republican trackers on two different occasions, but was on the phone both times. Her district went to President Trump by seven points in 2016.

Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN-07), one of three Democrats to vote against impeachment, also received a phone call when he was asked to comment.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13), who was ecstatic in a video she posted to Instagram ahead of the impeachment vote, admitted that she did not think impeachment was a “solemn” occasion.

“No, it wasn’t. Everyone knows that,” Tlaib said when she was asked about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA-12) description of impeachment as a “solemn” and sad event.

“House Democrats in Trump districts are running from questions about voting with Pelosi to overturn the 2016 election,” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel wrote on Twitter. “What are they afraid of?”
