Ohio Dems Call on DeWine to Address Censure of Gonzalez, Other Republicans

Ohio Democrats have asked Gov. Mike DeWine to “pick a side” as Ohio Republicans prepare to censure 10 of their own over the recent impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

The Ohio Republican Party is set to meet on Friday to vote on a resolution that would censure U.S. Rep.Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) for voting to impeach Trump, according to Cleveland.com. Gonzalez is one of 10 Republicans the party is set to censure.

“The President of the United States helped organize and incite a mob that attacked the United States Congress in an attempt to prevent us from completing our solemn duties as prescribed by the Constitution,” Gonzalez said in a statement on January 13. “…When I consider the full scope of events leading up to January 6th including the President’s lack of response as the United States Capitol was under attack, I am compelled to support impeachment.”

Ohio Democrats have called on DeWine, a Republican, to make a public statement about the upcoming censure.

“As Mike DeWine finds himself in the middle of a Republican meltdown, Ohio has watched DeWine continually cave to the extreme members of his own party in order to maintain his tenuous grip on power. Facing his biggest test yet, DeWine must decide which side he’s choosing in the ongoing split among the Ohio GOP,” said Matt Keyes, spokesperson for the Ohio Democratic Party, in a statement.

Gonzalez was also slammed by Max Miller, who is running for Gonzalez’s House seat.

“Anthony Gonzalez put himself and the socialists ahead of the Republican Party, our conservative movement, and the voters of his district,” Miller said in a tweet. “It is right for him to be held accountable by the Ohio GOP and come election day, he will be held accountable by the people of this district.”
