In Addition to the National Guard, DeWine Sending Ohio State Troopers to the Border

Border surge

Governor Mike DeWine announced on Monday that he will send Ohio State Troopers to the southern border, fulfilling the request of Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

The law enforcement officers will spend two weeks in the border state in an attempt to assist with curbing the current increase in illegal immigration.

DeWine signaled that the additional officers will “assist local law enforcement with border surveillance” and will not be making any arrests.

Earlier last week, the governor said he will send 185 National Guard troops to the U.S. southern border in an attempt to curb the dramatic increase in illegal immigration. DeWine was fulfilling a request from the Department of Homeland Security,

The action to send state troopers comes after Abbott penned a letter with Arizona Governor Doug Ducey pleading for assistance.

“Texas and Arizona have stepped up to secure the border in the federal government’s absence, and now the Emergency Management Assistance Compact gives your State a chance to stand strong with us,” the two said while asking for help and criticizing the immigration approach taken by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

DeWine follows a host of Republican leaders that have sent additional resources to the area. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the first to send members of various law enforcement agencies throughout the state to Texas and Arizona to help combat the crisis at the southern border.

Following Florida, Brad Little of Idaho, Kim Reynolds of Iowa, Pete Ricketts of Nebraska and Kristi Noem of South Dakota each promised to send reinforcements.

In order to further combat the dilemma, earlier this year, Governor Abbott announced his plan for Texas to build its own barrier along the southern border, due to lack of action from the Biden administration.
