The Democratic National Committee announced Saturday that its October debate will take place in Ohio, saying the state “is in play for 2020.”
“We’re excited to partner with the DNC to bring the next sanctioned presidential debate to Ohio,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper in a press release. “As is happening across the nation, Democrats are energized, formerly Republican suburbs are trending blue and voters across the state are waking up to Donald Trump’s many broken promises. Those are some of the numerous reasons that the president’s approval numbers in Ohio have tumbled 20 points since he took office.”
A venue and city have yet to be named, but the debate is set to take place October 15, and possibly October 16 if more than 10 candidates qualify. In order to qualify, candidates must poll at or above two percent in four sanctioned polls and receive donations from 130,000 unique donors.
Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH-13), a 2020 hopeful, didn’t make the cut for the upcoming September 12 debate in Houston. According to Roll Call, bettors are predicting that Ryan is the most likely to exit the race next.
“Donald Trump has broken one promise after another — from attacks on health care and farmers, to the tax scam, to zero progress on infrastructure — and those broken promises are hurting Ohioans from Lordstown to Cincinnati and cities, towns and communities in between,” Pepper added, claiming Trump’s approval rating in Ohio is sinking.
“Ohioans are ready to hear from our Democratic candidates how they will help working people, not the millionaires and billionaires who benefited from the GOP tax scam,” he continued.
The DNC confirmed on Twitter that the fourth Democratic debate will take place in Ohio.
“Save the date: the fourth Dem debate will be October 15 (and potentially 16) in Ohio! See you soon, Ohio Dems,” the Democratic Party said.
