Ohio Democrats are calling President Donald Trump “racist” and “un-American” for a controversial tweet he posted over the weekend.
“So interesting to see ‘progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world, now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough,” he continued.
Trump didn’t list any lawmakers by name, but it’s clear his comments were directed at members of the “squad,” a group of four freshmen Democrats, including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05), who are at odds with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12).
The president said last week that Omar “shouldn’t even be in office.” Democrats are now calling his remarks “racist” and “un-presidential.”

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH-13), a 2020 candidate, called Trump a “racist who’s [sic] goal is to incite fear and hate to divide us at every turn.”

“I’m freaking appalled that the President of the United States conducts himself in such a disgraceful and racist way,” Ryan later told reporters.

“We can’t heal as a country if we don’t recognize that the president’s rhetoric is vile and divisive. We need to call it out when we see it. All of us,” he wrote on Twitter Monday morning.

Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH-03) released a statement Monday calling Trump’s comments “disgraceful” and “reminiscent of a time in our country’s history when discrimination ruled.”
“Hearing the hateful rhetoric coming out of the White House cannot be tolerated by anyone who claims to love this country. We are stronger as a country when we are united, so I implore all Americans—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike—to speak out against this vile, xenophobic, and dangerous attack on our fellow Americans,” she added.

But President Trump stood by his claims during a short press conference following his remarks at Monday’s Made in America event.
“If weak politicians want to say – and the Democrats in this case – if they want to gear their wagons around these four people, I think they’re going to have a very tough election, because I don’t think the people of the United States will stand for it,” Trump said. “These are people that hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion.”
