A new poll shows that nearly 60 percent of Ohio voters support the proposals outlined in President Donald Trump’s new immigration plan.
At the end of May, Trump delivered a speech in the Rose Garden where he unveiled his administration’s new plan to tackle illegal immigration. In response, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) polled voters in seven battleground states, including Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.
As The Washington Examiner points out, majorities in all seven states said they would strongly support or somewhat support a “candidate in the next election who endorses most, if not all” of the concepts outlined in the proposal.
In Ohio, 58 percent of respondents said they support the new immigration proposal, according to the poll. Additionally, 60 percent of Ohioans said they strongly or somewhat support building “400 miles of fencing and other security enhancements” along the southern border.
Another 59 percent said they support merit-based immigration, while 55 percent said they support ending chain migration.
“In the run-up to the 2020 election, these polling data indicate that a full-scale effort by the White House to enact meaningful legislation that ends the current border chaos and adopt a merit-based legal immigration system would be viewed favorably by voters in the key states where the presidency and control of Congress will be decided,” FAIR said in a press release announcing the poll.
Mandi Merritt, regional communications director for the Republican National Committee, told The Ohio Star that “while Democrats refuse to act, President Trump has shown real leadership to address the growing immigration crisis at our southern border, and it’s resonating with voters.”
“President Trump proposed a comprehensive plan to secure our border and modernize our immigration system, and his recent efforts to pressure Mexico to step up and help stop the crisis at the border worked—and Ohio voters have taken notice,” she added. “In 2020, pivotal voters in Ohio will stick with President Trump who has shown real leadership on a key issue, rather than 2020 Democrats who refuse to act on the growing threat to our nation.”
