Republican Sen. Rob Portman Calls Trump Comments ‘Divisive’ and ‘Wrong’

Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) has been relatively quiet on the drama surrounding “the squad” on Capitol Hill, but he was finally reached for comment Monday by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

“That’s not something I would say, and I think it’s divisive, unnecessary, and wrong,” Portman told the outlet in a brief statement.

His comments, of course, were in response to President Donald Trump’s controversial tweets issued over the weekend.

“Why don’ they go back and help fix the totally broken and crimes infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough,” Trump said of the squad, which includes Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05), who’s from Somalia.

Democrats, like Sen. Sherrod Brown, were quick to denounce the comments as racist, as The Ohio Star reported.

“The president has shown repeatedly since the Central Park Five to questioning Obama’s birth to Charlottesville that he’s a racist. And he’s almost proud of it. The way he talks. It’s just very sad,” Brown added in a conference call with reporters Monday.

Former Republican Gov. John Kasich has been making the rounds on cable news to attack Trump for his comments, and even called on “preachers” to denounce Trump from the pulpit.

“I’m a believer that if people of all stripes, not just Republicans, Independents, Democrats, but preachers, preachers as well, begin to say this is not our country,” Kasich said on CNN Monday night, but didn’t exactly finish his thought. “This rhetoric, this anger, this division violates that basic covenant that America was founded upon.”

  1. So Senator Portman thinks that what the President tweeted was divisive, unnecessary and wrong, RIGHT? Where has the Senator been for the past two and a half years when the Democrat Party, the Obama FBI leadership, the Obama Cia Director and the Obama DNI director were EVERY ONE lying about anything and everything the President did before and during his campaign. Where has the Senator been with criticism of the ENTIRE Main Stream Media (MSM) when they have done absolutely NOTHING but report negatively about the President upwards of 96% of the time, with nearly 100% Unfactual reporting? Where was the Senator when these women from the “squad” have been calling him every foul name in the book? Where was the Senator when Maxine Waters was calling the President every vile name in the vocabulary and actually encouraging violence against the President, his Cabinet members and his supporters? NO SENATOR, you don’t have the right to criticize the President for defending the honor of our country. NOT ONE WORD the President said was wrong, nor was there one iota of “racism” involved in it. The problem you all have is that the President isn’t a COWARD like you are, and certainly NOT the RINO you are…..
