The Right and the Left Dig In Their Positions on ‘Life at Conception Bill’

Supporters of abortion and most of the media responded quickly to State Representatives Candice Keller (R-Middletown) and Ron Hood (R-Ashville) introduction of House Bill 413 last week which, if passed, will identify the unborn as “persons” for legal purposes from the moment of conception.

The “Life at Conception” bill which is also known as “Personhood” legislation, states: “No person shall purposely, and with prior calculation and design, perform or have an abortion.”

“Ohio GOP lawmakers want to ban all abortions, charging doctors with murder,” headlined a Cincinnati Enquirer article.

The Columbus Dispatch‘s focus was, “Bill threatens Ohio abortion doctors.”

“Ohio state lawmakers propose total abortion ban,” tweeted the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Central Ohio television station NBC4i said, “Lawmakers move to ban all abortion in Ohio, again.”

National Abortion Rights Action League tweeted, “NEW: After their 6-week ban was blocked by a federal judge, Ohio’s anti-choice politicians have now proposed a TOTAL ban on abortion. The proposed law could have abortion providers and patients alike thrown in jail—or executed.”

The Ohio Democratic Party included a reference to President Trump as well as Ohio Republicans in a tweet Friday, writing, “In 2016, @realDonaldTrump called for women to be punished for abortion, and now Ohio Republicans are following Trump’s lead, introducing legislation that could lead to doctors and patients being charged with murder.”

Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) weighed in as well, tweeting: “Another in a long series of recent attacks on reproductive rights. I will always stand by a woman’s right to choose.”

“Ohioans support safe and legal abortion, but GOP lawmakers just introduced a total ban. This unconstitutional proposal will cost millions to defend in court and it won’t stop abortions – it’ll just force women into unsafe situations,” tweeted the Democratic Caucus in Ohio’s Senate.

And Ohio Senator Sandra Williams (D-Cleveland) yelled in all caps:

THIS IS INSANE – AND IT MAY BE THE STRAW THAT BREAKS THE CAMELS BACK

HB413 (Hood-Keller) HAVE AN ABORTION IN OHIO – YOU MAY BE PUT TO DEATH

“PRO-LIFE” ADVOCATES WANT WOMEN WHO HAVE ABORTIONS SENTENCED TO DEATH

DOES THE MAN WHOSE SPERM CREATED THE EMBRYO GET PUT TO DEATH ALSO”

However, pro-lifers were not as vocal as those supporting abortion on social media.

LifeSite News penned, “Pro-life Republicans in the Ohio Legislature have introduced legislation that would fully recognize preborn humans as people in the state, and ban all abortions by putting prenatal killing under the existing murder statutes.”

We Can End Abortion wrote, “Ohio introduces personhood bill to recognize all abortions as murder.”

And Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio, backers of the bill from the beginning, shared a press release on Facebook. “Important Press Release!” they announced.

When asked about the loud response from the pro-abortion Left against the bill, Right to Life Action Coalition President Margie Christie expressed her shock to The Ohio Star, “It’s just phenomenal, we dropped this bill last year and we did not get the reaction we’ve received this year. This is what we do. This is why we exist.”

“I really think they thought, ‘Well heartbeat’s passed and we’re [pro-lifers] just going to go away.’ They haven’t stopped – they’re pushing for infanticide, so why in the world would pro-lifers stop trying to save babies?” Christie asked.

State Rep. Keller told The Star, “It’s time that we take a look at what we are as a nation. Are we going to have a culture of life here in the United States – especially in Ohio – or are we going to have a culture of death here?”
