Ohio House Candidate Mary Lightbody Promoting Plan To Increase Small Business Taxes By $1.2 Billion

If your Ohio small business makes just $26,000 per year, then Ohio House candidate Mary Lightbody thinks that you are rich and should pay higher taxes.  She laid out this far left, extremist argument during a podcast with the Columbus Dispatch starting at the 17 minute mark.

Mary Lightbody is the Democrat candidate running for Ohio House District 19.  District 19 includes most of Northeast Franklin County including Gahanna, New Albany, and Westerville.  The Ohio Star previously wrote about “High Tax” Mary Lightbody here and here.

During the interview, Lightbody quoted some figures that she received on the Ohio Small Business Tax Deduction from the Legislative Service Commission (LSC).  According to Lightbody, there are currently just over 600,000 small businesses in Ohio that are benefiting from this tax relief.

300,000 small businesses in Ohio make between $1 and $25,000 per year in business income.  If elected, Lightbody wants to generously allow those small businesses to continue being exempt from income taxes.

However, once a business goes over $25,000 per year, Lightbody would declare that those businesses are “rich” and should begin to pay confiscatory tax rates.  Again.  According to Lightbody, her plan would increase income taxes on over 300,000 small businesses by a whopping $1.2 billion per year.  If those increases were spread evenly across those small businesses, each would pay at least $4,000 more in taxes per year.

But that’s not how it would actually work.  Like Ohio’s formerly progressive tax system, those that make more money would pay more.  Much, much more.

So who are these filthy rich small business owners that “High Tax” Mary Lightbody claims are ripping off Ohio?  Just look around your community.

Most small businesses in Ohio are single owner or “mom and pop” operations.  They operate your local dry cleaner, car wash, bakery, or laundry mat.  They are usually your accountant, your doctor, your lawyer, and your plumber.  But “High Tax” Mary Lightbody thinks they are actually lazy, rich folks, cheating the government out of their just due.  Maybe she should leave her ivory tower college office a little more often.
