Americans for Prosperity Exposes ‘Corporate Welfare Horror Show’ to Congress for Halloween

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) launched the latest installment of their Unrig the Economy campaign on Tuesday entitled “Corporate Welfare Horror Show.” AFP is continuing to encourage Congress to reject the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank and “zombie” tax extenders.

The Export-Import Bank’s websites says it, “…is the official export credit agency of the United States. EXIM is an independent Executive Branch agency with a mission of supporting American jobs by facilitating the export of U.S. goods and services.”

As reported by The Ohio Star in June, “65 percent of the bank’s business benefitted just 10 major U.S. manufacturers, primarily Boeing, Catepillar and General Electric. But those taxpayer-protected benefits also went to foreign countries, particularly Mexico’s government-run oil and gas firm, Pemex, the UAE’s national airline, and Ryanair in Ireland.”

The Tax Foundation explained tax extenders, “…distort economic activity, create uncertainty and slow economic growth.” Instead of allowing tax breaks to sunset as written in law, extenders allow Congress to pick which groups of people and businesses get to keep tax cuts beyond their legislated length.

In Washington, as part of the Halloween-themed campaign, AFP delivered treats to Congress along with horror movie posters of the issues. Each Representative also received a letter with details about Unrig the Economy.

The new ad was launched on Twitter. “No one’s wallet is safe from the Corporate Welfare Horror Show. Share and tell Congress to oppose corporate welfare.”

The EXIM Bank was scheduled to expire on September 30, but AFP noted in their press release, “…a provision in the continuing resolution keeps it going until November 21.”

“This Halloween, AFP activists are calling on Ohio’s Congressional delegation to end the unfair practice of corporate welfare by rejecting the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank and tax extenders,” said State Director for AFP-OH, Micah Derry. “Both of these programs allow the government to pick winners and losers, while taxpayers get stuck with the tab. Both Ex-Im and tax extenders truly are a taxpayer’s worst nightmare.”
