Republican Think Tank Leader Matt Mayer Announces Exploratory Campaign for Ohio Governor in 2026

Republicans swept the statewide positions, beginning with the governor, in the November general election. However, a probable Republican candidate for the upcoming 2026 election for governor has already been identified.

Former president of the conservative policy organization Buckeye Institute, Matt Mayer now serves as president of Opportunity Ohio. Due to the time and resources required to create that campaign, he has decided to launch an exploratory campaign for the Republican nomination for governor in 2026.

Peloton Plans for Ohio Plant Scrapped

Peloton’s plan to build the company’s first U.S. factory in the Toledo area has been scrapped, and the company’s CEO is stepping down, the company announced in a news release.

Peloton also announced it was cutting 2,800 jobs, with the bulk of those coming at its headquarters in New York City. The announcements are part of a cost-saving effort the company expects will save around $800 million.

Amazon to Build 1 Million-Square-Foot Distribution Center, Create 1,000 Jobs in Canton

The e-commerce division of Amazon.com Inc. has committed to building a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in northeast Canton that will employ 1,000 full- and part-time workers when it opens in next year.

In choosing Canton, the company cited an exisiting trained workforce and a welcoming community.

Ohio Budget Revives Brownfield Remediation Program to Spur Redevelopment

The recently enacted state government budget will create a $500 million brownfield remediation fund designed to spur the cleanup and redevelopment of former industrial sites and other environmentally damaged properties throughout the state.

A last-minute addition to the two-year, $74 billion operating budget Governor Mike DeWine signed on June 30 revives the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund (CORF) program shut down under former Governor John Kasich in 2013. The reconstituted program will offer $350 million over two years toward cleaning up and revitalizing brownfields and another $150 million for the demolition of vacant and abandoned properties in Ohio communities.

DeWine Administration Lays out Its Work Over the Past Week, from Providing Kids with Books to Implementing School Virus Reporting Requirements

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and his administration provided a “Week in Review” for the past week, with actions ranging from providing free books to kids to requiring schools to report coronavirus cases to local health departments.

The week started off Monday with DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announcing assistance for five projects to create 574 new jobs and retain 1,058 jobs statewide. The Ohio Tax Credit Authority (TCA) reviewed economic development proposals brought to the board by JobsOhio and its regional partners. Collectively, the projects are expected to result in more than $23 million in new payroll and spur more than $68 million in investments across Ohio.
