Robert Mueller Repeatedly Refuses to Answer Jim Jordan’s Questions About Joseph Mifsud

Former special counsel Robert Mueller stuck to a common phrase when he was asked questions by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) about his investigation into Joseph Mifsud: “I can’t get into that.”

The Ohio representative tried to get Mueller to tell the House Judiciary Committee – and the millions of viewers across the globe – about the mysterious Mifsud during his five-minute questioning period. In Mueller’s report, he describes Mifsud as a London-based professor with high-level Russian connections, and as the person who contacted Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos about the “dirt” the Russians had on Hillary Clinton.

Jordan began his questioning by asking why Mifsud was not charged with a crime after lying to the FBI three separate times. Mueller told him that he could not answer the question.

Jordan continued to press the former special counsel about Mifsud, but again he declined to answer his question. The Ohio Republican told Mueller that he could answer the questions because he – Mueller – “wrote about it” and “gave us the answer” in his report.

Next, he described Mifsud as “the guy who starts it all” and then listed off Trump officials who were charged for lying to the FBI.

“You charge Rick Gates with false statements. You charge Paul Manafort with false statements. You charge Michael Cohen with false statements. You charge Michael Flynn, a three-star general with false statements. But the guy who puts the country through this whole saga, starts it all, for three years we’ve lived this now – he lies and you guys don’t charge him. And I’m curious as to why,” Jordan said.

Again Mueller declined to answer this question. However, Jordan tried one more time to get answers about the London-based professor. The following is Jordan’s final exchange with Mueller:

JORDAN: “When the Special Counsel’s Office interviewed Mifsud, did he lie to you guys too?”

MUELLER:  “I can’t get into that.”

JORDAN: “Did you interview Mifsud?”

MUELLER: “I can’t get into that.”

JORDAN: Is Mifsud western intelligence or Russian intelligence?

MUELLER:I can’t get into that.

JORDAN: “Lot of things you can’t get into.”

After this exchange, Jordan wondered why Mueller could charge 13 Russians “no one has ever heard of” and Trump campaign officials, but not the “guy who launches everything.” Mueller replied that he “did not agree” with Jordan’s characterization.

Jordan turned his attention to the “good news” when his questioning ended.

“The president [was] falsely accused of conspiracy. The FBI does a 10-month investigation and James Comey – when we deposed him a year ago, told us at that point they had nothing. You do a 22-month investigation. At the end of that 22 months, you find no conspiracy and what [do] the Democrats want to do? They want to keep investigating. They want to keep going.”

He continued:

“Maybe a better course of action is to figure out how the false accusations started. Maybe’s it’s to go back and actually figure out why Joseph Mifsud was lying to the FBI and … that’s exactly what Bill Barr’s doing. And thank goodness for that. That’s exactly what the attorney general is doing … and they’re going to find out whey we went through this three-year saga and get to the bottom of it.”
