Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Making California Sanctuary State for Parents Seeking Child Transgender Surgery

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill (SB-107) into law Thursday that makes his state a safe haven for parents who want their gender dysphoric children to be treated with drugs and surgeries when their states have attempted to protect minors from such life-altering interventions.

“In California we believe in equality and acceptance,” Newsom said in his signing message. “We believe that no one should be prosecuted or persecuted for getting the care they need – including gender-affirming care.”

The governor placed all the responsibility for the prescription of potentially irreversible cross-sex hormones and surgeries such as elective double mastectomies and castrations on parents:

Parents know what’s best for their kids, and they should be able to make decisions around the health of their children without fear. We must take a stand for parental choice.

“States across the country are passing laws to demonize the transgender community, especially transgender youth and their parents,” Newsom continued and added:

The hate demonstrated by these laws is unfathomable and has contributed to soaring suicide rates. 82% of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves, and 40% have attempted suicide, with suicidality highest among transgender youth. This is unacceptable – we must fight for our youth and their parents.

The bill was sponsored by LGBTQ activist and State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), who also authored a bill in 2020 that ended a requirement of registration as a sex offender for any young adult who engages in oral or anal sex with a willing child who is within 10 years of the minor’s age, claiming such a penalty to be “discrimination” against LGBTQ individuals.

According to the text of the new law, SB-107:

… would prohibit a provider of health care, a health care service plan, or a contractor from releasing medical information related to a person or entity allowing a child to receive gender-affirming health care or gender-affirming mental health care in response to a criminal or civil action, including a foreign subpoena, based on another state’s law that authorizes a person to bring a civil or criminal action against a person or entity that allows a child to receive gender-affirming health care or gender-affirming mental health care. The bill additionally would prohibit law enforcement agencies from knowingly making or participating in the arrest or extradition of an individual pursuant to an out-of-state arrest warrant based on another state’s law against providing, receiving, or allowing a child to receive gender-affirming health care or gender-affirming mental health care in this state, as specified.

Wiener applauded Newsom for signing the bill into law.

“States like Texas and Alabama are seeking to tear these families apart,” he posted to Twitter. “California won’t be party to it. We have your backs.”

Equality California celebrated the new California law as “affirming” transgender youth “while other states attack” them.

Newsom recently declared his state a sanctuary for girls and women seeking abortions. California has also identified itself as a sanctuary state for illegal aliens.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue referred to the new law as “Newsom’s latest sanctuary state scam”:

Illegal aliens who crash our borders can find sanctuary in California. Women who want to abort their child, but live in states with restrictive abortion laws, can come to California to have a doctor kill their baby. Now young boys and girls who are sexually confused, and who live in states where puberty blockers and chemical castration are considered child abuse, can go to California where they will be “treated.”

“The contempt that California Gov. Gavin Newsom has for America’s sovereignty is on a par with his contempt for state’s rights and parental rights,” Donohue added.
