Ohio Senate Recommends Rep. Louis Blessing III to Fill Vacant 8th District Seat

State Representative Louis Blessing III (R-Colerain Township) will likely be moving his office from the Ohio House to the Ohio Senate within a week.

On Wednesday, Ohio Senate Larry Obhof announced that Blessing would fill in the vacancy left by Senator Lou Terhar who resigned due to health reasons. Blessing beat out former Rep. Jonathan Dever and former municipal clerk for Cleves Judith Boyce for the vacant seat.

Blessing leaves a large hole in the House – he has been serving as the Education Committee Chair. The committee had planned to tackle school funding and the report card system this fall. A replacement Chair in the House has not yet been announced.

Rep. Blessing has served on major committees throughout his tenure, including Ways and Means and Finance. He is currently in his fourth and final term in the House and would not have been able to run again because of term limits.

His biography on the House website states, “Representative Blessing has an extensive background in electrical engineering. He currently works as an engineer at Super Systems, Inc. in Cincinnati and previously worked at Duke Energy and Nova Engineering.”

“He earned his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering at the University of Cincinnati,” the bio continues. “The representative is a licensed professional engineer and is a member of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers. He currently resides in Colerain Township with his wife, Heather, and son, Louie.”

Following in his father’s footsteps, Blessing too will serve in both Houses of the Ohio General Assembly. Lou Blessing Jr., his father, served in the House from 2005 to 2013. The elder Blessing was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1996, before he ran for State Representative.

The full Senate has to vote on the appointment, and the next opportunity will likely be Wednesday, October 9th, although there is an “if needed” session scheduled for Tuesday the 8th.

Blessing will be the fourth appointment to the Senate Republican caucus this year.
