Tim Ryan Votes in Favor of Reauthorizing the Hyde Amendment Even Though He Said He’s Against It

Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH-13) voted for a spending bill that reauthorized the Hyde Amendment after saying last month he would repeal the amendment.

The House of Representatives passed the Labor and Health and Human Services appropriations bill 226-223 Wednesday, according to Fox News. Seven Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, voted against the bill.

As The Ohio Star reported in May, Ryan wanted to overturn the amendment that prohibits federal money from going to abortions.

“Of course we’ve got to fund Planned Parenthood, we’ve got to get rid of the Hyde Amendment, we’ve got to make sure we invest into women’s health care. ” Ryan told MSNBC’s “Live With Stephanie Ruhle” on May 23.

Furthermore, the Ohio representative told Ruhle that the key to getting rid of anti-abortion laws are elections.

“But the reality is we’ve got to win elections … we now have the federal courts peppered with conservative pro-life justices. The Supreme Court is a conservative pro-life court. We’ve got to start moving in the right direction here politically and getting elected so that we appoint the judges and we win elections in these states,” he explained.

Ryan was once a pro-life Democrat and discussed his stance on abortion at a May 21 “StoptheBans” rally.

“I used to be an anti-choice Democrat. Then, for the first time, I met women who had had an abortion. And because of their courage, I changed my position. I am here to say, I will walk with you every step of the way,” he said.

Ryan is not the only presidential candidate to talk tough about the Hyde Amendment but vote for its funding anyway. California Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA-15) approved the spending bill even though he said during a CNN town hall he thought the amendment should be “repealed.”

Sixty-two percent of Americans are against federal funds going to abortions, according to pollingreport.com.

Ryan will be appear at the June 26 Democratic debate.

Ryan ranks 11th in the crowded Democratic presidential field, according to the Real Clear Politics average polls.
