The Battleground State Report Discusses Trump’s ‘Strategy’ to Position the ‘Squad’ as the Face of the Democratic Party

On Friday’s Battleground State Report with Steve Gill, Michael Patrick Leahy, and Doug Kellett – a one hour radio show from Star News Digital Media in the early stages of a national weekend syndication roll out – the team discussed the consequences of Trump’s tweets against the “squad” of four Democratic congresswomen and questioned how it may have been a “strategic” move.

Towards the end of the segment, the team speculated about the impact the “squad” could have on the upcoming Democratic debates.

Gill: Doug, there’s been a lot of debate in the wake of the “squad” of four fighting back and forth with President Trump after his Tweets that said, “Look, if you don’t like it here go back where you came from, fix it and then show us how you did it.” The media went apoplectic. There’s been a lot of speculation that President Trump did this intentionally to brand the Democrats as they were trying to distance themselves from this “squad” of four as Pelosi was fighting with them.

That he did this to make sure they became the face of the Democratic party. Particularly, Ilhan Omar, as we get more of these stories about her maybe marrying her brother and committing immigration fraud, and tax fraud, and perjury. And her as a Muslim woman from somewhere else who hates America is anti-Semitic, has demeaned our troops.

Has downplayed 911 as “Some people did something.” Has gone to fundraisers for the Council on American Islamic Relations that making her the face of the Democratic party and these three other women as well, that this was orchestrated, intentional. And if you look at the polls, it may have helped Trump more than them. And if you listen to some of the Democrats, even they are saying, “Trump won this round.” Was it intentional? Or does he once again defy gravity and stumble into success?

Kellett: Well it could be both, right? I mean, either way, I think you’re right on this. He’s certainly trying to do it. I think maybe he floated the idea with the tweets to begin with and maybe he saw the results. As you’ve pointed out, there are polls out there showing that it actually helped him with Republicans. I think it’s a good strategy. I don’t advise Nancy Pelosi or anything, but I think they need to get a hold of the “squad.” They really do.

Gill: Can they do that?

Kellett: Behind the scenes. I don’t know.

Gill: I mean can she reign them in?

Leahy: No.

Kellett: No. They need stronger words about them. And also she needs to take them off these committees because they’re on some fairly influential committees the four of them. And it’s like, take away their ability to really get in front of the camera other than on their own, right? I mean if she doesn’t do that than the strategy might play out. Don’t you think Mike?

Leahy: Well she made a huge mistake. Huge mistake when she named Ilhan Omar to the foreign affairs committee.

Kellett: Exactly.

Leahy: This is a huge mistake. She’s a national security risk. When she was a state legislator she actually had a conference with the Prime Minister of Turkey.

Gill: Traveled to Somalia as well.

Leahy: Traveled to Somalia where supposedly one of her relatives of which there are apparently many, maybe one she didn’t marry

Gill: It’d be the only one.

Leahy: Is apparently part of the government there. She is a national security risk. And it was a national security problem for Nancy Pelosi to name her on the foreign affairs committee. Now obviously if she takes her off, all the far left will go nuts. Vice President Pence called for her remove Omar from the foreign affairs committee. Didn’t happen. They do not.

Kellett: Let me throw this out there, Mike. Is it possible or likely that during these upcoming Democratic debates we were talking about in the first segment that some form of a question of this is going to come up? And they’re going to have an opportunity, these candidates to distance themselves from these four?

Leahy: They won’t.

Gill: If CNN asks the questions.

Kellett: Yeah.

Gill: But CNN isn’t going to ask them any tough questions. They didn’t in the first round.

Kellett: I mean they’ll throw them a softball like about, well contrary to Donald Trump being a racist. They’ll have the opportunity to say in answering the question, “Yeah, I don’t side with those four in this. But I certainly condemn…

Leahy: Yeah.

Kellett: Donald Trump or whatever, blah, blah, blah.

Leahy: Well whether or not the commentators ask that, any of these twenty could answer a question with that answer.

Gill: And again, if you’re one of the lesser-knowns looking for the six-second soundbite that moves you into the newscast rather than being ignored. This would be a way to have that happen.

Leahy: But if they did that Steve, how successful would they be in the Democratic primary? (Leahy laughs)

Gill: Yeah, I mean that’s the problem. The ‘squad of four’ represents those who are driving the Democratic primary process. So that’s why they’re all racing to be as far left extreme and anti-American as they can.

Leahy: See, I think maybe, this obscure former congressman Delaney might say something like that.

Gill: Tulsi Gabbard would be another one that might.

Leahy: Maybe. We’ll see.
