‘Scam’: Greta Thunberg Is Boycotting the United Nations Climate Summit

by Jack McEvoy

Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg will not be attending the United Nations’ COP27 climate conference in Egypt because she believes that the conference fails to effectively push the environmental agenda.

Thunberg on Sunday declared COP27 to be a “scam” where world leaders feign concern for the “climate crisis” to get attention during a question and answer session at the launch of her new book in London. The 19-year-old environmentalist said that world leaders are endangering the planet by “lying and cheating” instead of implementing “major changes” to reduce carbon emissions.

“As it is now, the COPs are not really going to lead any major changes,” Thunberg said. “Unless … we use them as an opportunity to mobilize … and make people realize what a scam this is.”

Thunberg said that true change will be accomplished by grassroots activists as those who hold power cannot be relied on to deliver a robust climate agenda. When Thunberg was asked about what she thought about the controversial tactics of certain climate activists, she stated that it was “reasonable” for individuals to pursue more radical action to protest the use of fossil fuels.

“We’re right now in a very desperate position and many people are becoming desperate and are trying to find new methods because we realize that what we’ve been doing up until now has not done the trick,” Thunberg said.

COP27 will run from Nov. 6 to Nov. 18 and numerous world leaders including President Joe Biden will attend the summit. Thunberg attended 2021’s COP26 which took place in Scotland; however, she called the conference a “failure” when she addressed climate protestors outside of the conference.
