During a specific discussion on Friday’s Battleground State Report with Michael Patrick Leahy and Doug Kellett – a one-hour radio show from Star News Digital Media in the early stages of national weekend syndication rollout – Leahy and Kellett talked about the Trumps administration’s suggestion of taking a censure to stop the impeachment and the idea of a civil war as a result of its continuation.
During the show, the team cited recent poll numbers claiming seven out of 10 Americans believe the country is upon a civil war and questioned whether or not this could be a violent war. ‘I think the broader problem here as you’ve identified. The Democrats and the House of Representatives don’t really seem to care that their actions are further dividing the country,’ stated Leahy.
Leahy: If the Trump administration and said ok, we’ll take a censure to stop this impeachment stuff. How would Nancy Pelosi respond in your view? What’s your best guess?
Kellett: Wow. I’ve got to put my Nancy Pelosi hat on. (Leahy laughs) That’s dangerous right?
Leahy: Dangerous.
Kellett: I don’t know the answer to that. I would say that there was a story out there, I can’t give you a source on it. I do remember reading that when she first made the announcement about impeachment the President apparently called Nancy Pelosi and wanted to know if there was a way to work this out.
That would be in my mind, ok what can we do that satisfies both of us in this particular area. And that’s why I’m bringing this up. Whatever you want to call it if they present it to Nancy Pelosi and she said, ‘No.’ Couldn’t you go to the American people and say, ‘Look, we should be on record saying that we don’t want this kind of behavior for future Presidents.
We don’t think the President and his activities here have risen to the level that they should be removed from office. And we don’t want to divide the country any further. You know one of the things that’s really bothering Mike and you’ve talked about this a bunch and your friends with Steve Bannon and he’s friends with the President. One of the things that bothers me is that we’re dividing the country even further.
Leahy: Yes.
Kellett: There was a poll this week that you and I talked about earlier this week that showed seven out of 10 Americans believe we’re headed to a civil war. I don’t know if that’s a shooting civil war or another type of civil war? At any rate, that’s certainly a division in the country right? Seven out of 10 Americans think that?
Leahy: I think that’s a very important point. But back to what you said, there was a report that President Trump called up Nancy Pelosi and said can we work this out. Now what you missed in that was what she responded. Has there been any report into what she responded? (Leahy laughs)
Kellett: Now that’s a good question. I think it was no.
Leahy: Let’s just say it was the colorful language that was translated into…
Kellett: But this was before he called her a third rate politician. Maybe there was some room to work with then. She said before this impeachment thing and the Ukrainian phone call and whistleblower and all that came about that she didn’t want to impeach the President. She just wanted to see him in jail. There may not be any room to work with.
But here’s what’s going to happen more than likely. I could be wrong but I would say the chances like ESPN has a percentage of wins, here’s my percentage of what’s going to happen. We’re going to have an impeachment. We’re going to have a House probably with all Democrats and maybe one or two republicans.
Mostly democrats are going to impeach the President. We’re going to go to the Senate and we’re not going to convict him and he’s not going to be removed. That will be the end of it.
Leahy: I won’t disagree with this. I think the broader problem here as you’ve identified. The Democrats and the House of Representatives don’t really seem to care that their actions are further dividing the country. And I think ti’s obvious. That poll you mentioned, the battleground civility poll we talked about that a little bit.
Kellett: Shouldn’t we all really be concerned about that. Democrats, Republicans, everybody that the countries getting so divided? We can always be divided about some things.
