Ohio House Democrats Launch Website as Hub for Gun Control Efforts

 

Ohio House Democrats have launched a new website to serve as a hub for their efforts to pass numerous gun-control bills in the state.

The website, called “DoSomethingOhio.com,” encourages Ohioans to contact House Speaker Larry Householder (R-Glenford) and Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina) and ask them to hold hearings on the bills.

The Democrats are also circulating a form letter that Ohioans can send to their lawmakers.

“Ohio leaders have signaled that they are finally willing to enact commonsense gun safety measures. Two proposals in the Ohio Legislature would help keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people,” the letter states.

“I encourage Ohioans to use DoSomethingOhio.com to get involved and reach out to House and Senate leadership, committee chairs and the governor’s office to demand action on commonsense gun safety,” House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) said in a press release.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes and in their communities. We owe it to our families, friends and neighbors to restore our state’s promise as a safe place to live, work and retire—not fear the next tragedy,” she added.

House Democrats pointed to a March 2018 poll that showed 91 percent of Ohioans support “banning gun sales to people convicted of violent crimes.”

As The Ohio Star reported, eight gun-control bills have already been introduced since the mass shooting in Dayton. Some of the bills have the support of Republican State Sen. Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering), who is calling on her fellow Republicans to join her “in passing long overdue commonsense gun legislation.”

The Ohio Liberty Coalition, meanwhile, is preparing to start the referendum petition process to have any red flag law that passes the Ohio General Assembly placed on the 2020 ballot for voters to decide on.

“Second Amendment volunteers would be out in force collecting signatures during the March 2020 primary,” said Ohio Liberty Coalition President John McAvoy. “This could cause problems for Ohio House candidates [who] supported red flag.”
